5 Original Poems from Instagram

Deep in thought...

So, we meet again for Part 2 of the Original Poems! Have you read Part 1?

Recently, I re-watched one of my favourite movies, Dead Poets Society (1989), and it reminded me once again of the power and beauty of poetry. It’s an inspiring movie about Mr. Keating, an English teacher, whose passionate teachings not only instil a love for poetry in his students but most of all, teach them inspiring life lessons, especially carpe diem – seize the day!

“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

Mr. Keating, Dead Poets Society

So true.

I’ve collated a few of my poems from Instagram which started out as simple captions but sprouted into poems. Poetry, for me, suddenly feels more natural when you become so emotionally-arrested by a photo that you can see that it’s desperate to tell you a story. It’s dying to explode with rich and colourful words and only you can capture that magic into your hands and let it run loose onto paper.

Here are 5 original poems from Instagram...

The Sky is an Orchestra
The sky is an orchestra
a symphony so loud
an ever-changing, rearranging
chorus of clouds

The trees sway like dancers,
the wind plays guitar,
and at night the musicians
accompany the stars

It's a musical masterpiece
so perfectly scored
each sunrise and sunset
conducted by God.

Guiding Light
always cherish
every moment you spend
with family
love them,
like you’re going
to lose them,
and whenever you feel
lost
and lonely,
remember
that your family
is your compass.
in this world of darkness,
they are
your guiding light.

Astronomical Mastery
how great the Creator
to oversee
such astronomical
mastery
the vast expanse
of earth and sea
the infinite stretch
of His galaxies

the universe's
cosmic rays
the swirling stars
of the Milky Way
I am reminded
once again
how insignificant
I really am

yet despite the epic
enormity
of His sweeping plains
and cosmic sea
it can't compare
(how can this be!)
to His overwhelming
love for
me.

Fairytale Dreamers
Time to wake up, sweet princess
Don't you sleep all day
It's cosy under the covers
And there you want to stay,
But there's no knight in shining armour
To shield you from the alarm
Your losing time, and hitting snooze
will only do more harm.

In your dreams, you slay great monsters
And you wear a noble crown
But dreams like that don't come true
By just simply lying around.
There's a kingdom that awaits you
Yet their hero is in bed
Dreaming but not doing
The things that she had said.

You don't need no fairy godmother
To whisk you on your feet
You don't need no true love's kiss
To stir you from your sleep
You only need that passion
That's burning deep inside
And you'll be up before the world
Has had time to open their eyes.

You had wished upon a star
One dark and twinkling night
That each day, you'd rise before the sun
And from your bed take flight
Like the earlybirds from their nests
Who so freely catch the prize
And achieve in the early hours
What others take all day to find.

If you want your happy ending,
You must first get out of bed
Stop slaying dragons in your sleep
And slay the day instead
For in the twilit hours of the morning,
And in the breaking light of dawn
As hands get busy like clockwork,
That's when fairytales are born.

Solitude Blues
Enveloped in blue neon light
Like a shadow in the night
There I'll be at quarter to 3
Wandering down a moonlit street
And as I wander all alone
I'll hear the sounds of a saxophone
Then the trumpet's distant blare
As the jazz bar fills the air
Louder and louder the music grows
The brassy highs, the rumbling lows
I'll keep on winding through the town
'Till I finally reach the sound
And there you'll find me savouring the beat
Sipping my tea in the corner seat.
