How do you eat Shabu Shabu?

I
f you’re ever wandering the streets of Brisbane in want of a Japanese meal, you must try Bishamon Japanese Restaurant! How can you resist the cosy, inviting atmosphere of the restaurant offering a toasty refuge from the crisp cold outside? I dined at the popular Bishamon recently and their Shabu-shabu was one of the heartiest meals I’ve had in all my life! You have to try it!

So, what is Shabu-shabu? This Japanese dish involves cooking a variety of vegetables and thin slices of beef in a shared hotpot that sits at the centre of the table. It’s really simple yet so fulfilling and a great way to bring the family together.

There’s something so special about Shabu-shabu. The way everyone is sitting around the hotpot cooking slices of delicious food one piece at a time and laughing all the while; it’s not far off from the classic toasting-marshmallows-around-the-campfire setting!

So, how does one eat Shabu-shabu? I’ll break it down for you in 6 easy steps…

1. Ask for the Shabu-shabu.

2. The waiter/waitress will turn on the hotpot once it is brought to your table.

3. Trays of cut vegetables and thin beef slices as well as dipping sauces and rice will be prepared for you.

4. Once the soup in the hotpot gets bubbling, use some shared ohashi (chopsticks) to dip any vegetables and meat slices into the hotpot. Feel free to put in lots at once! Leave them boiling in the hotpot and take out once cooked.

5. Transfer the cooked pieces from the hotpot into your dipping sauces. Then, place it atop your rice and using your ohashi (chopsticks), eat your delicious beef and veggies with your rice! In the meanwhile, cook some more veggies and meat slices in the hotpot!

6. Keep dunking veggies and beef into the hotpot and then taking out, dipping in sauce, and enjoying with rice!

So hearty and wholesome!

I love how entertaining it is to watch the food cook, especially when people stir the pot accidentally and everyone’s food makes an orbit around the hotpot and you end up stealing other people’s slices!

I was so impressed with this restaurant and the unforgettable shared-family experience! My nationality is half-Japanese and my family definitely recommend Bishamon for its authentic Japanese cuisine, family-friendly atmosphere, kind staff, and memorable experiences!

This is exactly how dinners should be! Cooking together, enjoying together, and laughing together! It is the shared experiences which make family meals so memorable, and ultimately make it into the photo albums!

So what are you waiting for? Don’t forget to make a reservation!
