Does your phone distract you?

Hello! Happy Motivation Monday!

Yesterday I was scolded by an angry voice in my head because I had distracted myself on my phone for an hour.

On a daily basis, I find myself fighting against the powerful magnetic pull of temptations like social media. It leaves me feeling anxious and nauseated thinking of all the precious minutes I'd forgone just so I could scroll through a feed of memes or get the inside scoop on some juicy celeb gossip.

So I had to cop this brutal scolding, but at least it left me with an important note to self…

Note to self:

So, I've just wasted an hour.

Imagine all the beautiful things you could have achieved in that hour. Probably two workouts back to back if you really wanted. You could have smashed out half that essay for homework. Or walked your dog around the neighbourhood, twice. Replied to a few emails. Read a chapter of a book. Started a blog post. Or ran 3km and back if you felt so athletically inclined.

But no. You just sat on your phone.

Think of all that time you lost watching episodes, scrolling needlessly through your feed, searching up nonsensical things aimlessly. You lost so much time. Precious, valuable time you'll never get back. As Eric Thomas says, "Time is non-refundable."

An hour, once wasted, is lost forever. And it will come back to haunt you the night before that assignment is due, as you whimper, through upwellings of tears, "If only I had another hour!"

You mean, that hour you spent on your phone yesterday? Or those collective bursts of 10 minute scrolls which were innocent fun at the time, but now, cruelly add up to an hour that you so desperately need right now?

Well, too bad. You brought this upon yourself. Admit it.

Now you wish you had focused instead of getting distracted doing something that didn't line up with your goals and dreams.

Notice the nature around you
Just think, the time you dedicate to your phone could have been quality time spent with family. But how can you give it to them when you're cooped up in your room!

How dare you let social media get more time with you than your loved ones!

How dare you devote more time to Facebook than real faces?

How dare you prioritise your phone over everything else when it is not even living and breathing and doesn't care in the slightest how much time you spend with it.

Your phone will never feel lonely or hurt the longer you're away from it, but a real person or pet definitely will.

Why don't you devote this time to those who are living, breathing, or heavenly beings who do need your unconditional love, your undivided attention, and your good company!

Spend that time walking your dog, writing letters to your grandparents, replying to that email your friend sent weeks ago, or helping your parents with the cooking and cleaning and washing and drying.

Or spend that hour tackling an unfinished task, smashing out a workout, ticking off a to-do list item, journaling, praying, reflecting, noticing the beautiful nature around you.

Your phone can easily eat away an hour of your life, but only if you feed it your time. Why don't you, instead, spend that hour investing in your body and mind.

Imagine all the beautiful things you could achieve in an hour…

Why don't we return the phone back to our pockets and embrace the light, not of the fluorescent screen, but the light of a new day.

Embrace the light of a new day

Happy Motivation Monday everyone!
